Infantile Spasms Awareness Week

Early Recognition Can Change Lives

Infantile Spasms Awareness Week is an important time for families affected by Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Infantile spasms (IS), also known as West Syndrome, are a rare but serious type of seizure that typically appear in the first year of life. For children with TSC, these seizures are more common, and early recognition and treatment can make a significant difference in long-term developmental outcomes.

Infantile spasms often present as brief, sudden movements—such as head drops, stiffening of the arms or legs, or repeated crunching motions of the body. These episodes can be subtle, sometimes mistaken for reflux or normal infant startle reflexes, which makes awareness especially important. A video recording of the events can be helpful for clinicians in diagnosing IS quickly.

Prompt medical evaluation is crucial. Effective treatments exist, and early intervention offers the best chance to reduce seizures and protect neurological development. During this awareness week, TSC Ireland encourages parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to familiarise themselves with the signs and to seek immediate medical advice if they have concerns.

By spreading awareness, we help ensure that every child with TSC receives timely support, accurate diagnosis, and lifesaving care. Early action matters—and together, we can make a difference.
